Manipur International University (MIU) is an Autonomous State Statutory International University. It is established, recognized, and institutionally accredited by the State Government of Manipur. It is recognized and listed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, Government of India under section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956 as a State Private University. It is empowered to award degrees under section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956. It has been declared as an “International Institution of Excellence,” an “Institution of State Importance,” and “State Research Institute” by the State.

  • The Manipur International University was initially established by the State Government of Manipur by the Manipur International University Ordinance, 2018 (Ordinance No.1 of 2018) promulgated by the Her Excellency the Governor of Manipur, which was published in the Extraordinary Gazette of the State Government of Manipur on 26th June 2018 after the due official process, vetting, verification and approval of the State Government of Manipur including the State Cabinet. Later, the monsoon session of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the Manipur International University Bill, 2018 (Bill No. 8 of 2018) on 23rd July 2018. The winter session of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly once again unanimously passed the Manipur International University Bill, 2018 on 21st December 2018 with necessary amendments.
  • Manipur International University Act, 2018 (Manipur Act No. 2 of 2019) was approved by Her Excellency the Governor of Manipur on 23rd January 2019 and duly notified by the Law and Legislative Affairs Department of the State Government of Manipur in the official Gazette extraordinary on 14th February 2019. The University has been duly approved and listed by UGC ever after.It is the First Fully Autonomous University in India and an aspiring Research-oriented University under National Education Policy, 2020.

The Logo of the Manipur International University is used by the MIU to represent the University in all of its official correspondences, certificates, website etc. The logo portrays two elephants guarding the Ashoka Chakra representing the Dharma Chakra (Wheel of Dharma; a wheel represented with 24 spokes symbolically representing the Dharma, the right way of living, cosmic law and order, four noble truths of life by Lord Buddha or simply the life) and Ancient shortened version of Pakhangbha Paphal representing the supreme God of the Meitei tradition of State of Manipur.

The logo also contains the following:

“Jnanam Anantam” a phrase in Sanskrit written in Devanagari script meaning “Knowledge is Infinite”.

“Fiat Lux” is a phrase in Latin which means “Let there be light” in English which can also be found in Rigveda and also in Book of Genesis which is part of Hebrew Bible. This word is considered divine and has exerted a powerful influence on the English poetic tradition.

MIU is located in the scenic state of Manipur North Eastern India. MIU campus locations are spread across various districts of Manipur. The Administrative Headquarters of the University is presently located at MIU HQ, MIU Palace, Airport Road, Imphal, Imphal West, Manipur – 795140, which is a 2 minutes drive from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. Landmark – HRD Academy.

MIU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), MHRD, Government of India under section 2(f) and section 22 of UGC Act, 1956.

MIU is purely a traditional university with on-campus learning programs. However, it may start distance learning and online programs in the future according to the demand of the people.
